Promenade by Pelagia Kyriazi
From a
different worldview, Pelagia Kyriazi explores aspects of the uncanny found between the personal memory and the urban
experience. As Pelagia Kyriazi has often observed, the works on black paper have been
captured on the conceptual axis of positive and negative elements: the images that emerge in the brain as a result of a social interaction are perceived by
the painter as positive, whereas the black-and-white drawings that ensue,
as negative ones: “Images exhale-release, idols inhale-absorb”. The painter starts
without a draft, “removing” from the image its unnecessary elements and
preserving the endless transformations that it undergoes after its internal
processing. The result is a reversible reality, the animation of a moving x-ray
of a
world on a blackboard. As far as the economy of thought and means are
concerned, the painter's technique finds its equivalent in the black and white
drawings of Nikolaos Gyzis (1842–1901). With very few means the impression of
an ideography is achieved, one which
does not imitate the world of phenomena but instead recaptures it again: these
are fossilized moments of a multidimensional universe, in which gravitational
forces, geometric perspective and Euclidean geometry have temporally collapsed
and in a moment that matter falls into lethargy, the mechanisms that hold its
parts together are revealed.
